You may not realize it, but your skin is actually the largest organ in your body and the first line of defense against foreign invaders. It is also capable of absorbing both toxins and critical nutrients. Much like your liver, kidneys and other vital organs, caring for it is a critical component of good health. Your hair and nails are also extensions of the skin and made of many of the same elements. Here are some ways to care for these underappreciated elements of your body.

Hair

Your hair will absorb all kinds of pollutants that you may not be aware of, so it is important to clean your hair regularly. If you have dry hair or live in a dry climate you may consider using a good conditioner and giving it a good deep conditioning as needed based on your hair type. This is particularly important if you color your hair. If you do color your hair, you want to pay careful attention to the chemicals that are used. Keep in mind that your skin (including your scalp) is an organ, so anything you put on your hair will eventually be absorbed into your skin.

Nails

Like your hair and skin, one of the most critical elements of healthy nails is moisture. When your hair and skin dry out, so do your nails. Dry nails can lead to cracked, bleeding cuticles and brittle nails. One of the best ways to protect your nails is to wear gloves when washing dishes or subjecting your hands to any type of harsh chemicals. Invest in a high quality hand moisturizer or lotion as your hands might need some extra help.

Skin

Ironically, one of the very best things you can do for your skin has nothing to do with your skin. Moisture is one of the most critical elements of good healthy skin, but drinking plenty of water will help hydrate your skin in a way that slathering on a lot of moisturizers will. That being said, moisturizers do not hurt in keeping your skin soft, smooth and supple. When choosing a moisturizer, a natural product like coconut oil or shea butter will be far more effective than a commercial moisturizer loaded with a lot of chemicals. Be sure to consult your dermatologist about specific care for your skin. Ask them about the best skin treatments, products, and habits to adopt to get healthy, young skin for years to come.

The health of your hair and skin is a fairly good indicator of your health overall. Dry skin is more prone to wrinkling, so that’s another great reason to keep it hydrated. Possibly one of the best things you can do for your hair skin and nails—and the rest of your body—is to drink plenty of water and get plenty of rest.
